A NAS box (Network Attached Storage) is becoming more and more common in Danish homes. A NAS box might sound like some dangerously expensive hardware to a lot of people, but it is no such thing. A NAS box is in most cases a standard PC, only smaller and made for one simple purpose, and it’s often controlled by a small Linux system on the box. A NAS box is basically an intelligent hard drive, connected to a network, but not the same as an external USB hard drive. A NAS box can do a lot more than a USB hard drive due to the fact that the NAS box is still a little PC in disguise. This gorgeous little thing from QNAP, named TS209-PRO is no exception, and the design is top quality.
Introduction:
Packaging:
To my big surprise, the NAS box wasn’t black as I had expected after looking at various photos and even the box it arrived in.

As seen on the above specifications sheet, the TS-209 Pro packs a decent and somewhat powerful machine. 500MHz and 128MB ram 1 gigabit LAN and space for two 3.5” hard drives. Note the 3 USB ports perfect for connection a USB printer etc.
Being able to connect a USB printer to the NAS server makes it easy to share a printer on a network. Especially when looking at the TS-209 PRO’s power consumption at a maximum of 29.3W. Remember that new pc’s easily consume 300W and more (a lot more), so this one only uses 1/10 of that which is worth considering.
